The Maquoketa Valley Wildcats ended its volleyball season with a 3-1 loss to Starmont in a Class 2A Region 6 Quarterfinal match at Starmont Oct. 21.

It was the third time the Wildcats and Stars played this season, with the Stars winning all three matches.

Starmont won set one, 25-19, before Maquoketa Valley evened the match, winning set two, 25-14. But Starmont won the final two sets, 25-18, 25-20, to advance in tournament play.

Emerson Whittenbaugh and Taya Tucker each delivered 22 kills to lead the Wildcats, with Payton Beamon adding three.

Tucker had four blocks, while Whittenbaugh and Krista Ries had three.

The Wildcats’ defense responded to several Starmont kill attempts. Whittenbaugh ended the match with 26 digs, followed by Ella Imler with 22, Beamon 14, Carissa Sabers 11, Tucker and Avery Krapfl 10 and Amaya Hunt and Kylie Chesnut eight.

Imler was perfect serving, going 20-for-20. Krapfl was 13-for-13, Sabers 11-for-11 and Beamon 7-for-7.

Coach Brandy Whittenbaugh said her team battled all match long.

“We are disappointed in the outcome for sure. The girls played well for the most part and it was a point for point match. I think blocking was the biggest takeaway. Starmont got a lot more touches than we did, but give our defense credit, they dug a lot of ball. Our hitters swung away and had a great night at the net. To Starmont’s credit, they dug extremely well and got more touches at the net.”
