Riding Cy Huber’s sub-18 time, the Maquoketa Valley boys finished eighth in the 20-team West Delaware Invitational Oct. 8 at Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester.

Huber’s 17:55 (30th) led a strong finish from the rest of the team, with all five counting times under 19 minutes. Second was Michael Schaul 33rd (18:07), followed by Nolan Ries 42nd (18:18), Derek Mensen 47th (18:20) and Ethan Doyl 49th (18:25). Running as well were Mason Lubben 55th (18:34) and Preston Roling 70th (19:01).

Tipton took the team title with 49 points, followed by Western Dubuque 56, Center Point-Urbana 82, Mount Vernon-Lisbon 156, Waverly-Shell Rock 165, West Delaware 167, Grinnell 173, Maquoketa Valley 201, Clinton 206, Xavier 252, Cascade 303, Anamosa 318, Vinton-Shellsburg 391, North Fayette Valley 395, Independence community 485, Oelwein 487, Edgewood-Colesburg 487, Beckman 549, North Cedar 559 and Maquoketa 625. The overall individual winner was Tipton’s Caleb Shumaker with a time of 16:28.

Coach Pat Meehan commented, “This was a very strong meet, comprised of mainly 2A to 4A schools. But we were somewhat flat, coming off two good performances previously.”

In the girls varsity race, three Wildcats ran. Emma Doyl finished 31st (22:26), Jaiden Porter 33rd (22:34), and Kriya Atwell 56th (23:35).

Three runners were in the JV races. Brock Trenkamp finished 60th (20:47), Landin Frasher 61st (20:49) and in the girls race it was Jordan Hogan 76th (27:15).

The Wildcats also braved the frigid temperatures of Oct. 12 to compete in the North Linn Invite at Troy Mills. The boys ended in fifth place, trailing Tipton 24, Marion 65, Mason City 118, and Williamsburg 122. Their total of 156 topped the rest of the field that included Solon 189, Grundy Center-Gladbrook-Reinbeck 208, Cascade 228, Washington 238, Regina 254, Hudson 295, Mount Pleasant 332, Edgewood-Colesburg 401, Springville-Central City 430, Alburnett 431 and Midland 445.

Schaul took the lead in this one, ending 23rd (17:50). Chance Downs was next 32nd (17:57), followed by Huber 33rd (17:57), Ethan Doyl 34th (18:00) and Ries 45th (18:16). Also running were Derek Mensen 52nd (18:30), and Lubben 56th (18:45).

The varsity girls again did not have a team total. Running were Porter 45th (21:58), Emma Doyl 56th (22:27) and Atwell 79th (23:26).

Reece Mensen was the lone entry in the JV girls race, finishing 57th (29:45). Roling paced the JV boys, fourth (18:21), followed by Trenkamp 34th (20:03) and Frasher 54th (21:00).

In the middle school races, the Wildcat girls ran eighth with 139 points, trailing the rest of the field. Leading the way was McKenna Bush 52nd (17:49), followed by Zari Ambundo 53rd (17:49), Cecily Trenkamp 54th (17:51), Allison Hogan 57th (18:00) and Claira Gray 64th (18:31). Also in the race were Josie Temeyer 70th (19:43) and Adeline Rudd 76th (22:15).

The middle school boys placed sixth among 10 teams entered. Arion Rave was 20th (13:33), Toby Grimm 21st (13:33), Mason Jolley 53rd (15:01), Mathew Schaul 57th ( 15:15) and George Livingston 75th (18:03).
