Maquoketa Valley’s wrestling team placed ninth at the Cascade Invitational, Jan. 20, at Cascade.

Western Dubuque won the team title with 227 total points. La Porte City Union placed second (190), Beckman third (144.5), Cascade fourth (103), Central DeWitt fifth (91), Midland sixth (75), Dubuque Senior seventh (71), Regina and Wahlert eighth (62), Bellevue and Maquoketa Valley ninth (36), Northeast 10th (32), and Central City 11th (13).

Tim Harmon led the Wildcats with a third-place finish at 170 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, pinned Cascade’s Cade Rausch in 40 seconds. In the semifinals, he fell to Western Dubuque’s Carter Kluesner in 4:50. In the championship match, Harmon won by medical forfeit over Wahlert’s Conner Dehn to secure third place.

Evan Elgin finished fourth at 182. In the quarterfinals, he won a 4-0 decision over Bellevue’s Luke Giesemann. In the semifinals, Elgin lost by fall to Western Dubuque’s Jake Hosch in 4:15. In the championship round, Elgin lost a 9-7 decision to Wahlert’s Bryce Anstoetter.

Carter Kruse (195) placed fifth and Michael Schaul (138) battled but did not place.

The team faced East Buchanan and Lisbon, Jan. 23, at East Buchanan. The Wildcats went 0-2 on the night.

Against East Buchanan, MV fell, 60-15.

Schaul won an 8-2 decision. Elgin and Kruse both won by forfeit.

Devin Smith (220) lost by fall. MV forfeited at 106, 113, 120, 132, 145, 152, 160, 170, and 285.

Lisbon defeated Maquoketa Valley, 81-0.

MV competed in the Louisa-Muscatine Invitational, Jan. 25, and placed 10th.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy placed first with 226 points. West Liberty placed second (181.5), Belle Plaine third (131), Davenport West fourth (126.5), Burlington fifth (98), Louisa-Muscatine sixth (91), Washington seventh (83), WACO, Wayland eighth (57), Highland, Riverside ninth (54.5), and Maquoketa Valley 10th (41).

Harmon led the team with a first-place finish at 170. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, he pinned West Liberty’s Austin Elizalde in the semifinals. In the championship match, he won a 5-4 decision over Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Alex Koch.

Kruse finished fourth and Schaul fifth. Elgin and Smith both battled but did not place.
