Just one measly point separated the Maquoketa Valley boys cross country team from Waverly-Shell Rock and the top of the Jesup Invitational Oct. 3.

In one of the few meets run that day due to wet courses, the Wildcats compiled 61 points, short of the 60 from W-SR, but pacing the rest of the field by a good margin. Third was Denver with 85, followed by Union fourth (143), Jesup fifth (161), Starmont sixth (165), Benton Community seventh (175), Grundy Center-Gladbrook eighth (187), Hudson ninth (260), Dike-New Hartford 10th (271), Oelwein 11th (333), North Linn 12th (346), New Hampton 13th (356), Edgewood-Colesburg 14th (361), MFL MarMac 15th (384), Don Bosco 16th (394) and Wapsie Valley 17th (498).

Cy Huber’s fourth-place finish in 17:25 led his team, with every one of the counters in the top 20. Michael Schaul was next, 11th (17:37), followed by Ethan Doyl 14th (17:49), Derek Mensen 17th (17:55) and Preston Roling 18th (17:56). Mason Lubben ended 27th (18:05) and Nolan Ries 34th (18:14).

In the girls race, just three Wildcats ran, ending in 38th place (Emma Doyl — 21:50), 51st (Jaiden Porter — 22:28) and 58th (Kriya Atwell — 22:54).

W-SR’s Emma Hoins took the title (19:00) while Denver claimed the team crown with 90 points. Second went to Starmont (116), followed by Lansing Kee third (120), Benton Community fourth (129), Jesup fifth (133), Dike-New Hartford sixth (148), Hudson seventh (159), W-SR eighth (163), Central Community ninth (180), North Linn 10th (187), Grundy Center-Gladbrook 11th (312), New Hampton 12th (352), Union 13th (359), Wapsie Valley 14th (371), MFL-MarMac 15th (380) and Oelwein 16th (448).

In the JV boys race, Brock Trenkamp finished 24th (20:29) and Landin Frasher 25th (20:33). In the JV girls race, it was Jordan Hogan 75th (28:22), Annie Trenkamp 82nd (29:37) and Ci’Ann Richardson 87th (30:34).

The middle school boys were led by Arion Rave 22nd (9:36), followed by Toby Grimm 33rd (9:52), Mason Jolley 61st (10:33), Matthew Schaul 67th (10:53) and George Livingston 95th (12:45). For the middle school girls, it was Zari Ambundo 94th (12:46), McKenna Bush 95th (12:49), Allison Hogan 98th (12:59), Cecily Trenkamp 99th (12:59), Claira Gray 100th (13:07), Josie Teymer 106th (14:05) and Adeline Rudd 112th (15:02).
