Two games last week added to the Maquoketa Valley girls’ basketball team’s season mark of 17-3.

The Wildcats hosted Alburnett, Feb. 4 for a 49-36 win and took out Starmont there, Feb. 7, 61-22. The wins put them in second place in the Tri-Rivers, trailing North Linn at 18-2.

Against Alburnett, the Wildcats trailed in the first quarter, 14-11, but amped up their offense in the second and led by a slim point, 23-22, going into the break. In the third, defense kicked in and they held the Pirates to just four points, scoring 14 of their own for a 37-26 lead to open the fourth quarter.

In the Starmont game there Feb. 7, the normal Wildcat offense began from the start and pounded the Stars with a 61-22 defeat.

Individual stats for both games were not available by press time.
