Class 4A’s top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier showed the Western Dubuque Bobcats why the Saints are so highly ranked with a three-game win Sept. 17 in Cedar Rapids.
The Bobcats did rise to the occasion after a 25-15 first-game loss. Western Dubuque battled for every point, but fell, 25-20, 25-18.
“It just wasn’t our night,” WD coach Megan Scherrman said. “We fought hard but we couldn’t get anything to go our way against a very good Xavier team.
“We are working through our kinks and working on getting better everyday. Right now we need to continue to work on this. Keeping our servers inbounds and being more offensively aggressive is going to be key for us moving forward.”
WD’s leaders were: serving — Clare Horsfield 9-of-11, Ella Meyer 7-of-9, Maddie Harris 6-of-7, Meredith Bahl 6-of-8, Kaylee Elgin 5-of-5, Madison Maahs 5-of-7; aces — Maahs two, Meyer one; kills – Bahl 11, Harris seven, Meg Besler three, Elgin two, Maahs one; blocks — Elgin four, Besler two, Harris and Maahs one; digs — Horsfield eight, Bahl and Maahs seven, Meyer five, Harris three, Elgin one; assists — Maahs 19, Meyer three.
