At the Class 1A District qualifier May 21 at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls, Maquoketa Valley’s Isaac Zirtzman saw his season come to an end.
The Wildcat, playing as an individual qualifier from sectional play, fired an 86 to place 10th in the individual standings. Only the top two players not affiliated with a qualifying team advance to the State Tournament May 27-28 in Newton. The top two are Ben Macy of AGWSR, Ackley, with 80 and Ben Hesner of East Buchanan, 82, both members of qualifying teams, so third place Ty Purdy of Don Bosco and Ed-Co’s Kody Hoeger, both with 83, will move on to State.
In the team race, it was East Buchanan 345, AGWSR 347, Ed-Co 353, Don Bosco 358, Midland of Wyoming 386, Easton Valley 388, North Butler 390, Lisbon 392, calamus-Wheatland 405 and Starmont 408.
“It was a tough end to a great golf career for Isaac,” said coach Ron Besler. “Going to State in 2019 as a sophomore and losing last season to the pandemic, we were all hopeful he would make a return trip this season, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
“Coach (Tim) Andrews and I have been very appreciative of the opportunity to coach Isaac throughout his high school career and have enjoyed seeing him attain some of his lofty goals over that time period. We wish him well in all of his future endeavors.”
